Why We Are Conducting the State of Amateur Radio Survey
Amateur radio has a rich history and a vibrant community, but like any evolving field, it faces both challenges and opportunities. At the National Amateur Radio Alliance (NARA), we believe that the best way to support and strengthen the hobby is by understanding the needs, experiences, and concerns of the operators who make up this diverse community. That’s why we are conducting the State of Amateur Radio Survey—the most comprehensive and in-depth study ever undertaken on the current state of the hobby.
Understanding the Needs of Operators
The amateur radio community is made up of individuals with different interests, skill levels, and operating habits. Whether someone is a seasoned DXer, an avid homebrewer, a new licensee, or a dedicated club leader, each operator has a unique perspective. Our survey seeks to gather insights on:
- How and why people get involved in amateur radio.
- The challenges they face in staying active and engaged.
- The resources they find most useful—or wish existed.
- Their experiences with licensing, education, and skill development.
Creating Actionable Change
This survey isn’t just about collecting data—it’s about taking action. The insights we gather will help guide NARA’s programs, outreach efforts, and advocacy strategies. Additionally, we will share key findings with clubs, organizations, and the broader amateur radio community to help drive meaningful improvements across the hobby.
Your Voice Matters
By participating in the State of Amateur Radio Survey, you are helping shape the future of amateur radio. Your input provides the real-world data needed to identify trends, address challenges, and create opportunities for the next generation of operators.
Join us in this effort—take the survey, share it with fellow operators, and help us build a stronger, more connected, and more vibrant amateur radio community.
The survey is still in development and has not yet launched. We are currently refining it and will be sending it to a select group of operators for beta testing before its official launch in May.
